Geladas, Wolves and a Local Community Success Story
Menz-Guassa
Located 260 kilometres northeast of Addis Ababa and accessible by road, Menz-Guassa is managed by the communities living adjacent to the Guassa area and promoted by the Frankfurt Zoological Society. This indigenous management system has been traced back to the 17th century and is one of the oldest conservation management systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. The area is home to the Ethiopian wolf, gelada monkey, grey duiker, klipspringer, spotted hyena, leopard, common jackal and serval cat. A wide variety of birds, 114 species to date, have been recorded in the area.
