What type of luggage should I take?

You should pack normally as if you are going on a trip to Europe or Australia or the United States as you will be taking mostly commercial aircraft around the region.

If you are staying at a remote lodge in the Pantanal or the Amazon, luggage should be kept to a minimum and your bags should be soft-sided so these can be made to fit onto the luggage pods of light aircraft. We are regularly asked by the charter flight companies to remind our clients to ensure their luggage does not have hard sides and has no built-in frame or wheels. The dimensions of the door of the luggage compartment on some light aircraft are restricted is size and soft-sided bags will allow the pilot to more easily load and manipulate your luggage into the confined area of the luggage hold.

These luggage restrictions sound very little but bear in mind the following:

  • All lodges and hotels provide fresh towels and basic toilet amenities.
  • Laundry can be done on a daily basis (and for many lodges this service is included in the tariff, although hotels do charge a nominal fee).
  • Mainly casual clothing is required.

More formal attire is usually required only when staying in the more prestigious city hotel establishments or on any of the luxury trains.
