The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost element of mainland Antarctica, and the only part of the continent of Antarctica that extends outside the Antarctic Circle. The Peninsula is essentially a heavily glaciated mountain range extending from South America's Andes mountains, with peaks progressively higher as the range continues farther south.
